For the school as a whole, former Principal Linda Nelson says, "they help maintain our excellence." She believes the Foundation is important for a variety of reasons; most importantly, she says, because it's composed of alumni who care so much about the school that they keep supporting it years after they graduate. Southerner, December 2008
Created in 1983 by then-Principal George Dahl, Assistant Principal Jerry cady, and alum Dick Westby, the Foundation has grown significantly from its humble beginnings. Alumni, staff, and community members work through the Foundation to provide funding for South High School programs and projects, ranging from supplies in the Media Center, to funding for Assistant Coaches, to a new building on the Athletic Field, to scholarships for worthy seniors.
Chartered in the State of Minnesota as a non-profit corporation with 501(c)3 status, the Foundation maintains accountability and transparency to its constituents, offering a balance & connection between givers and the needs of the students. No longer a "bunch of old people", the Foundation takes its role in the community very seriously, and has made great strides in the last several years to step out and be counted.
The South High Foundation stands above its peers as an organization with not only the drive and vision, but the power and forsight to accomplish its goals. With over 12,000 registered members, the Foundation recognizes that it still has a lot of work to do. The organization strives to focus on development, working on improving its operations and increasing interaction with the community. "Paying it forward"
