From Alvin's Service:
Alvin L "Red" Hirschi was born May 24, 1925 in Sioux Falls SD. He was the youngest of three children born to Jack & Ovella Hirschi. Brother Charles and sister Esther are deceased. Over the summer of 2009, dad was complaining of back and neck pain, nausea, and was losing weight. On November 10, he was diagnosed with advanced cancer. He spent his final days at this Fridley home, cared for by his family with support from hospice nurses. We are thankful to have had the opportunity to give him loving care.
He grew up in Minneapolis and attended south High School. He was only 17 when he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and ultimately served as the ball turret gunner on a B7 bomber ("Lucy") based out of Kimbolton England. On November 30, 1944, on their second to last mission, the "Lucy" took on severe gunfire and the crew bailed out over Germany. The ensuing nearly six months as a prsoner of war created an indelible imprint on his life. Since it was near the end of the war when the Germans had no resources left, and the Russians were advancing on them, they were constantly on the march. The POWs suffered right along with the German troops as they struggled for survival in the German winter, warming themselves by campfires, and constantly foraging for food.
Dad took great pride in his craft as a commercial cabinet and fixture maker and master carpenter for over 30 years. Most family members have items made by him in our homes, and remember his excellent supervision of many construction projects. He enjoyed the up north cabin experience -- fishing, nature, and the wonderful hectic breakfasts around the big table at the cabin with family.
He was a loving and ever-present coach, advocate, touch-stone for his children and their families. He was a devoted husband to Ardelle for 66 years, setting an example for true love and commitment. He was a gentle and steadfast father to his children. We thank God for him!
